I'm saddened by the memorials, but am so glad that we have had them.  To let this day pass without them would have been a dishonor and a great failure done to those who fell one year ago today.  I found myself referring back to the Bible verse today that the the greatest evil will come like a thief in the night, when you least expect it.  I found myself hoping that something would happen today, so that we would know that we were not dealing with the greatest evil... we expected something today, and had it happened, it would have demonstrated that we were dealing with people.  But it is clear to me that we are not.  We are not dealing with people who have a modern human mindset.  They are the feudalists of 300 years ago in their thinking, but have the weapons of today (and maybe tomorrow) in their hands.  I have a difficult time even knowing where to start when it comes to thinking about what these people's thinking process is.
In the media, they are preparing us, mentally and emotionally, for the war we are about to fight.  We will go to war with Iraq, but we cannot be sure of what that will mean for us...for them, it will mean some innocent civilian lives will be lost.  I pray that it doesn't mean the same for us.

There is hope, that someday, the governments will let go of the fear and the "us" versus "them" mentality, but there is only hope of that if ordinary citizens make the time and the effort to realize that as humans, we have so many more similarities than we do differences.  I pray that more people will volunteer for work in Africa, that more people will study abroad around the world and make international friendships, and tonight, I pray for discernment to see where I fit into the bigger picture.
