Over 1400 Germany pictures - Oldenburg Innenstadt

Freitag, 23 Marz

(Written Samstag, 13:30 PM--I just got up.)

Well, I had written a long version for today, but just as I was going to save it, my computer froze and told me that I needed to switch to outlet power to keep from losing my work.  Only it didn't unfreeze to let me turn off my computer and save my work.  When I turned back on my computer, today was gone.  So maybe today will be a bit shorter.

German imported word of the day: "Brain Freeze"

Use:  I went with Michael and Emelee (his girlfriend from France-I thought she was German because her language skills are awesome!) and some American students to the Mensa for lunch.  I told Michael (auf Deutsch) that I would miss ice water, and he told me that he couldn't drink things that cold or it would give him a stomach ache or a brain freeze.

Syncronization Dubbed voices on a soundtrack for a TV show or movie.

*Happiness is:

finding a pencil...

telling the time...*

*Eine lied von "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown*

Happiness is also losing your voice while dancing until 3:00 in the morning with German students, and walking back to the dorms with an American friend and a guy from Morocco, and knowing that you and the American friend have to talk in German because the Moroccan can't understand you if you speak in English.

Last night was a lot of fun!  And yesterday too.  Kurt showed me where to catch the bus to get down to the fussgangerzone (a walking plaza) which is basically the whole center of the city.  It's like something right out of a movie.  I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

I got a handy today.  A handy is a cell phone.  To get a hold of me for 9 cents/minute, you dial 1016969 (The 9 cents/minute routing code), then 011 (you have to dial this anytime you want to make an international call from the U.S.), then 49 (Germany's country code), then 178 8243644.

So much more to tell, but my battery is sitting at 70%, and I still don't have my boxes with my voltage converters, so I should stop here.

Today, I wish I had packed in my suitcase instead of in boxes:

Slippers The bathrooms are at the other end of the hall, and the floors are a bit dirty, so it would be nice to have slippers to walk from the bathrooms in.
Towels I packed a bunch of towels in boxes because they made great padding for the other stuff I had in the boxes, but I ended up buying a towel today so I could take a shower.

Things I was glad to have yesterday:

A shower! It felt really good to finally get a shower.
The people around me here Especially Kurt, Jenny (the British girl who lives next to me), Michael and Emelee, and also the Germans on my floor.

I have to say that German TV is quite interesting!  Yesterday I watched part of a show called "Die Wunderbare Jahren."  Some of you may be familiar with it by another name, like "The Wonder Years."  It was an episode I had seen in English, so it was interesting mit Deutsche Syncronization.

I also saw "Wer Wird ein Millionaere?"  This one's pretty self-explanatory.  Jenny actually told me that this show originated in Great Britain, then America copied it, then other countries followed suit.  It's all in German, and you'd be surprised how hard some of the easy questions are when you don't have the cultural or language base to understand them.

Enough for now...

Germany Map - where I lived

I lived and studied at the German university in Oldenburg which is near Bremen, and about two hours east of Hamburg, Germany.  Clearly visible on the map are Bremen and Twistringen, Germany.  When I go back, I'd like to visit Hannover and Berlin, as well as Cologne.  Also, I'd like to visit more German castles, Because I only visited two in Nuremberg.  Click on the buttons on this page to see pictures and advice about studying abroad in Germany (and traveling advice for France), or click the links below to go to strive4impact.com's other pages.
