March 22 - July 22

31 Marz (Page 2)
| British word of the day | Jenny, the other day, used the word "faffing." The other afternoon, I wasn't doing anything when I was supposed to be doing homework, so I was just faffing around. |
| German words of the day | Exchange rate, stock price Wechselkurse, Borsekurse |
This is the view from the restaurant where we ate lunch. Pretty cool, huh? On the left and right are now banks, but the one on the left used to be a nobleman's house. It was taken over by the bank, because no one could afford to live there anymore. The cathedral in the middle is Saint Peter's Dom in Bremen. They're singing Brahms' Requiem here on April 14th. I'm going to try to attend...I think that would be quite cool!

Here's Kelly, Jim, Mara, and Anne having lunch! Mara's surely enjoying her food!
Bremen is the home of the Beck's brewery, so of course some people had Beck's with lunch! We were going to take Beck's Brewery tour, but it was too full to handle our group. So we'll have to go back to do that.
* A bit of history about Bremen... If you notice the red logo above the Beck's writing, you'll see that there's a key inside of the logo. In the 1500's, when Bremen was first founded as a city, there was a door to the city with a key that was given to the mayor. In the case that something was coming to attack the city (most likely a virus or plague or something), the mayor would lock the door to protect the city. So now when you drink Beck's beer, look for the key inside the logo.*
The altar of St. Peter's Cathedral (Lutheran) in Bremen.
The view from the front of the cathedral to the back of the cathedral, and the organ at the back of the cathedral, with the stained glass window behind. An incredible work of art! The pictures really do not give a very good idea of how it feels to walk inside...truly spectacular!
The pig is as tall as Mara! (Just kidding Mara!)
Then of course, while we were in Bremen, we had to visit Mecca. No, not the Holy City of Islam, but the Mecca of American Capitalism. WAL-MART.
This place was huge! So big in fact that they had a band playing inside, and had a walk ramp to carry you and your cart from level 1 to level 2. Personally I was a little disappointed to see Wal-Mart in Bremen, because when I go somewhere I like to feel like I am a foreigner, while not feeling like I am too foreign to not understand what is going on around me. Wal-Mart being in Germany kind of threw that off quite a bit.
The
WalMart bus proudly advertises "Immer Wal*Mart, Immer Niedrigstepreise"
("Always Wal-Mart, Always Low prices"). It will pick up people at 5 different locations throughout
Bremen. The bus driver found it quite funny that I was taking a picture of
the bus.
On the left is the walk up to Wal-Mart superstore. On the right is the moving walkway that will take you and your cart from level 1 to level 2.
I have a lot of other pictures of Bremen which will appear here in a couple of days.

Then it was time to take the train back to Oldenburg.
The Bremen Bahnhof is beautiful from the outside, but it being restored, so if the scaffolding comes down while I'm here, I will take a better picture.

I lived and studied at the German university in Oldenburg which is near Bremen, and about two hours east of Hamburg, Germany. Clearly visible on the map are Bremen and Twistringen, Germany. When I go back, I'd like to visit Hannover and Berlin, as well as Cologne. Also, I'd like to visit more German castles, Because I only visited two in Nuremberg.
