Generally, suppliers of roof trusses can deliver everything you may need for your roof frame, and they will most often deliver it in truss form. But if you have a more custom roof line, it is possible that you will need to build the whole or some part of the roof frame yourself. The idea of building your own roof frame is also well within reason for an experienced user, although generally, it's best if you consult with some local professionals, and get some more carpentry books with serious details on rafters.  If you have a garage that you plan on heating, and if the insulation is going to be placed in-between the rafters, then you must leave a wide enough space to provide for the insulation's mass/thickness.  The rafters can be placed at 12, 16, or 24 inch spacing.  Make sure that you look at your local building code*, because the spacing and span, as well as the size, of the roof rafters in your trusses should be coordinated to definitely hold a certain weight weight for your location.  If you look at the weight for your location, it includes things like roofing materials plus any snow, ice, or leaf/other stuff accumulation.

Things that people mess up when building their own roofs include ordering trusses that are the wrong size, and not thoroughly inspecting the trusses when they are delivered to the building site.  So, when you order your roof trusses, be sure that your plans have the following information included: the slope, the size of the rafters, the spacing of the rafters, the length of the building's overhang, the location and the size of the ceiling joists, the size of the ridge beam and any other bearing beams, and the weight or what your roof must hold.
