Joggers put an exceptional amount of stress on their legs and feet. Because of this, the likelihood of them developing foot problems is much greater than for the rest of the population. It is unusual to find a jogger who has been completely free of foot-related problems.

A good many jogger-associated problems are the result of abnormal flattening of the arch of the foot. This can lead to achillies tendon problems, knee soreness, heel spur conditions, calluses, shin splints, and even hip problems.

Most of these problems can be helped with an orthotic. An orthotic is a specially designed shoe insert which decreases the amount of flattening of the arch and realigns the bones of the feet to a more normal relationship. To design the orthotic, a forty-five minute office visit is required. During this time, a gait analysis is done; measurements are taken of the foot and leg alignments; muscle power and flexibility are established; and x-rays and plaster impressions of the heel are taken. The impressions are then sent to a laboratory where the orthotics are constructed to exact specifications.

Being a jogger myself, I can assure you from first hand experience that orthotics are very comfortable. They have also been invaluable to many professional and amateur athletes. This is not to say that orthotics will cure every problem of the jogger, but they can alleviate many jogger-related problems.
