Summer 1995
Jonathan is 15

Perceptions of Reality
The way I view the world
The way other people perceive me
The way we each see the world individually

Perception is based on our senses
What we hear
What we smell
What we taste
What we touch
and mostly
What we see

What our senses show
is the way the world is perceived by us as individuals
this perception is what we know life to be

Our lives are our reality
Therefore what we perceive becomes our reality
Perception is reality

Others perceive me the same way
The way I sound, the way I look, and the way I act.
It is important, then, for me to know how I want to be perceived and to speak, appear, and act accordingly.
The way they perceive me will be based upon these things, and that perception will become their reality of me.
Perception is Reality

We each have our own realities
which are based on our perceptions
Life is about learning to see and understand other people's perceptions
So that the reality we all live in is not completely different from our own.

The way people look at me
The way people hear my voice
And the way I feel to others when they shake my hand
Is their perception of me
And that perception becomes part of their reality.

The rest of their reality is
how they perceive what the world has to offer them.
Perception IS reality.

Dear God,

As I'm sitting here tonight, I realize that I do believe in you much as I always have, but I'm trying to figure out how you fit into my life. I know you're in all around me, but maybe I'm unsure of how much control I want you to have in my life and so I suppress you. Help me not to do this.
I see so much in Melissa, but I don't want to mess up our friendship, and perhaps I'm scared of a relationship. Not just with her, but many of the girls who have approached me recently.

God, I am unaware of how Kristina's doing, although I do have a pretty good idea and I'll find out tomorrow when I talk to her.

Patrick's first mass and ordination were a good renewal for me, and I'm sure were life-changing experiences for him. Thank-you for introducing me to him.

God, help all the above with their futures. Help me decide what to do about Melissa, and help me let you in my life. Also help those around the world who need your guidance, protection, and consolation.

Thank-you!

Peace Always,
Jonathan

In Mexico on Love
Jonathan is 15

In my life, whenever I go somewhere that I don't know many people, I am always on the lookout for love; subconsciously afraid that if I am not watching and looking, I may miss or mess up the chance... not by much, but I'll just barely miss it.

When women have approached me with love, I become aware of necessity of attachment, of the potential for broken hearts, of the longing for someone who's not there; and these things which I have seen scare me. They scare me so much in fact that I have walked away from many opportunities which I have seen at love.

I look at others and see their happiness in/for/with each other, and although I know that I could have that kind of joy in someone else, I wonder if someone else could be that happy with me. And so I sit back, wish, and look out for love, but I remain lonely.

I am always on the lookout for love. However, when the opportunities arrive for me to give my love and receive love in return, I have become afraid.

It seems that on every trip I've taken, I have seen something so significant that it has made me feel insignificant.

However, it is strange that in this feeling of insignificance I have found such inspiration and strength in and for my life. In fact, feeling belittled has actually led me to a deeper realization of how significant I actually can be.

When people walk into my room, they may notice many plants around. People often find this interesting and some find it strange. But I usually don't notice plants that way.

Someone may ask me "Why are you so interested in plants?" and my reply would be "Why do I live?"

To me, helping plants to grow is not any different than eating, or sleeping.

It's something that I do. I see such beauty and resilience in the plants, traits that I think we all could learn a lot from.

What is the purpose we are on this earth? - That is life's ultimate question. A question which individuals usually find the answer to within and for themselves. However, the reason we are enabled to live on this planet is plants. They provide us with food and the air we breathe as well as the life that is always around us.

Since they do so much for us, we should give something back, and so I help them to grow. Interesting... maybe, strange...no. It's just part of my life.

Perhaps Dr. Jack Kevorkian does have the right to assist people in suicide. Perhaps he should be allowed to help them end their lives.
Perhaps.
But if Dr. Kevorkian has the right to assist suicide, then perhaps suicide should be a legalized act. In fact, if there are going to be no laws against suicide, then perhaps there's nothing wrong with committing suicide.
Perhaps.
But if there's no reason to say that suicide's wrong, perhaps then we should all end our lives at a time and place we choose.
Perhaps.
Perhaps society needs to take a good long look at itself. The upcoming generation sees and hears certain messages. Respect yourself and others. Violence is not the answer. Suicide is selfish, it harms many people besides you. Don't do drugs - Just say no!

The upcoming generation also sees and hears other messages. Divorce is okay. Legalize marijuana. Private owners of guns should be allowed to carry their own weapons concealed for protection.

Perhaps you can see that there is a lot of difference between these two sides. In fact, they are almost opposites. And society sees the result. Generation X. The generation that doesn't stand for anything. The reason... we don't know what to stand for. Many Xers have made it into the real world and have formed their own opinions about the world. However, Xers and the generation coming behind us are still being bombarded with these complete opposites and that has left many of us with only one place to stand; in the middle.

      Mid-April 1995

Everyday I make a choice
whether or not to use my voice
The choice I make might show others me
But will they know me by what they see?

If I choose to hide me inside,
Maybe for fear, but not lack of pride
Then I lose out because what they see
is not really the person who is me.

And when I lose out so do they
because, perhaps, I could have helped them pray.
So every day I make a choice
