I recently received an email which said: "You put on your web site the method of calling outside of America, but you never put anything on there about calling America from another country. You should try it sometime." So, without further ado, here is the page of instructions for "how to call America from another country," and ways to do it cheap! (If this helps you, you can offer thanks to me, and thanks to Fred for emailing me to suggest the creation of this page! Please also feel free to use the Tip Jar down below.) The links for cards spread throughout this page will get you cheaper calling than simply calling from your phone. The link at the bottom of the page for dial around plans will also get you much cheaper calling from America to the world, especially if you find the best dial around plan for the country you want to call from America! |

America began the phone industry, thanks to Alexamder (sic) Graham Bell and his supporters. When international calling came around, every country was assigned a number. Each country was, and still is assigned a three digit number. Some countries have more than one three digit number, and you can find out what those international routing codes are on my Simple Instructions for making an International Call page . Well, America (being the official inventor of the telephone,) got to decide on the numbering system, so guess what number America chose? That's right! America chose to be 1. That is why every long distance number in America is preceded by a 1. (i.e. 1 + area code + 7 digit number). If you are not dialing a 1 before the number, that may be why you are having trouble reaching your calling destination in America.
